I was wondering if anyone could give me any advice.

I have completed Level I Manual Bookkeeping with 89% and am awaiting my Level II Computerised results. I am studying with the Home Learning College.

I have just started Level II Manual Bookkeeping top up course with them.

This is a complete change of career for me as I used to be a laboratory technician. I live near Bury St Edmunds and am looking for a part-time job or voluntary work that will allow me to gain more experience but I seem to be hitting my head against a brick wall. The lack of experience seems to be the stumbling block.

What worries me is that will it be like this also when I have completed Level II Manual Bookkeeping? I am currently working 12 hours part-time at my local Sainsbury's but my main aim was to better myself and make it easier on my husband who is working all hours to make sure we make ends meet.

Any advice would very much appreciated. I have registered my CV with several agencies but so far nothing seems to come up.

Hi there,  i'm a new at this stuff too and there are hardly any places in my area to get help and advice.  I'm studying m level 1 Manual at the moment and hopefully move to level 2 computerised soon as that is what I use at work.

Its not easy finding work as an accountant there re websites that specifically for this type of career  which you can also upload your cv and keep checking on a national level.  Although i'm no where near qualified to do this job i'm looking around all the time to see what's available.

Hi,

Thank you for your replies. I will look into where my nearest branch meeting is and when. Thanks for this Ken. I haven't gone along before.

Stephanie - thanks for the advice. I have uploaded my CV with quite a few websites but it always seems to come down to lack of experience. I suppose eventually there will be something out there for me.

It just seems quite daunting and dissappointing when you apply to positions and you don't hear anything.

Hi Karen
I have just seen your post.  I am in a similar situation in that this is a change of career but there does not seem to be the jobs out there so experience can be gained.  Back in February I did a stint as a purchase ledger clerk.  It was supposed to be with a view to a permanent position.  Despite the agency telling them I had no experience they curtailed it after two weeks saying that they needed someone with more experience!  My beef is how do you get the experience if you can't get a job!  Still on the bright side I have two more weeks experience than I did in the first place!
I am currently trying to pluck up the courage to do my Level II manual exam!

To all prospective bookkeepers lacking experience,

Starting out is probably the most difficult part - no experience, no job, no clients. Go along to a local branch meeting to meet other bookkeepers at all levels and make connections.  There will be established practices who may need assistance or who may provide some work experience.  Presentations/speakers on marketing, business success etc can be valuable as well as just networking with other bookkeepers. Look at the Events page and see what's on!

Hi Ken,
Thanks for your reply. I looked into the date of the Suffolk Branch Meeting and unfortunately for me it was on the 30th April which was a Monday night and I work on Monday, Tuesday and Saturday nights. I will look out for the next meeting and hopefully I shall be able to go.

Hi Caroline,
Thanks for your reply. It is hard and I do hate it when they tell you they need experience as you say how can one get experience if they cannot get a job. They really do not know if they are throwing away the chance to employ a good worker.

Good Luck on your Manual Levell II Exam. I'm sure you will do well. I must admit I am dreading it as it has been quite a while since I have had to go away and sit an exam although when I sat Level I at home I never looked at any notes or anything as I thought I might end up wasting time and also wanted to do it on my own.
I am just working through the Level II course at the moment.

Once again thanks folks.
