Hi,
This might be a silly question but do you all do your own Self Assessments?
And do any of you have your own accounts on sage??
The reason I ask is, my practice started in Sept 2011 and I need to submit my 1st SA. I have printed off the forms etc including employment forms, UK property and self employed forms.
But I can't decide what to do regarding date of accounts. I've put my own accounts onto sage. Should I just run it from the year I started to anniversary or would it be easier to run alongside the year end so start Sept 2011 and end accounts April 2012.
A couple of people have recommended the latter.
Has anyone else come across this and if so, what did you do?
Thanks
Angela

Hi Angela,
I do my own SA. I started my business in September, but chose to run my business from April - March for simplicity. There can be benefits to choosing a different financial year, but for me the drawbacks outweighed them. As I can't give advice, here's a good blog from Trueman Brown on the topic: http://truemanbrown.blogspot.co.uk/2010/10/sole-traders-choosing-your-accounting.html

I started my business last May but for simplicity I am choosing the year April 6th to April 5th, and will be doing my own Self Assessment shortly.
Good luck!

I have a different financial year to the tax year but I was told 2 year ago by the HMRC that any new business must fall in line with the tax years, I do all my accounts on sage and process my own SA
